Chelsea, 7th Grade

"Before joining the after-school film program, I didn’t know anything about making movies—just that I liked watching them. But now I can say I’ve actually learned how to *make* one! We learned all the basic shots like close-ups, wide shots, and over-the-shoulder angles, and it was so cool to see how each one can change the way a story feels. I also got to try acting for the first time, which was a little scary at first, but the teachers made it fun and helped me feel more confident. Now I know what it’s like to be both behind and in front of the camera."

Bryan, 7th Grade

"Joining Amplify Film Studies: Because You Matter film program was one of the best things I’ve done. I'm a first generation Mexican-American, and I never thought I’d get the chance to learn how to actually use a film camera, but now I know how to shoot scenes the right way, adjust focus, and frame shots. The most exciting part for me was learning how to edit. I got to take the footage we filmed and turn it into a real short movie. Seeing all the clips come together made me realize that editing is like telling the story all over again—but in your own way. Now, I really want to keep learning and maybe become a professional movie editor one day."

Ruth, 7th Grade

"Before the film program, I didn’t even know what a production designer was. But now I know it’s one of the coolest jobs in a movie! I got to help design and set up the background of scenes—like choosing the furniture, props, and even the colors—to make everything feel real and match the story. It was fun paying attention to the small details that most people don’t even notice but actually make a big difference. I learned how much planning and creativity goes into making a film look the way it does. Now, I watch movies in a totally different way!"

Samantha, 7th Grade

"In Amplify Film Studies: Because You Matter film program I learned how to write a real screenplay, which is something I never thought I could do. We started by learning the 3-act structure—beginning, middle, and end—and how every story needs a setup, conflict, and resolution. It helped me organize my ideas and turn them into an actual script with scenes and dialogue. Now when I watch movies, I can spot things like foreshadowing or rising action. It made writing fun for me, and the best part is that it actually helped me become a better student in my English Language Arts class. Now, I understand story structure more clearly, and I feel more confident when I write essays or creative stories in school. This program really opened up a new way for me to think about storytelling, and reassured me that my words and writing truly matter."
